Berlin, 31 May 2006. Air Berlin PLC has steadily continued along its
growth path, posting first-quarter revenues of EUR 224 million, a 3.7
percent increase compared with the prior year. The net result for
the seasonally weak Q1 improved by EUR 8 million to a net loss of EUR
31 million (Q1 2005: net loss of EUR 39 million). The operating loss
was EUR 58 million (prior year: operating loss of EUR 37 million).
This reflects a number of special items: Unlike in the first Q1 2005,
the Easter business will be included in the Q2 results of 2006.
Furthermore, Q1 2006 was affected by investments in the future growth
of the company as well as higher costs of aviation fuel. "Under these
circumstances, we performed extremely well," stated CEO Joachim
Hunold in Berlin on Wednesday. Despite the lack of the Easter
business in the past quarter, passenger numbers developed positively,
increasing by 8.5 percent to 2,751,770. Hunold said: "I am confident
that we will post a positive net profit for the full year 2006."
