Berlin (euro adhoc) - In the first three months of 2009, sales and
earnings of medical device manufacturer WORLD OF MEDICINE were
slightly above planning for the year 2009 as a whole. The volume of
sales reached TEUR9,810 (same period last year: TEUR10,791), and
outpaced last year's quarterly average (TEUR9,241) by 6.2%. Major
orders placed after product launches strongly influenced the figures
reported for the first quarter of 2008. This rapid pace must be
viewed relative to the business performance over the remainder of
2008.The return on sales before taxes in the first thee months of
2009 equaled 11.3%, and was slightly above the figure planned for
business year 2009 (11%).

"We are taking a realistic and optimistic approach to the future,"
says Peter P. Wiest, CEO of WORLD OF MEDICINE. "Our earnings in the
first quarter of 2009 speak for themselves. However, in these times
of weaker markets, we are focusing efforts into boosting our
innovative power. Our priority is not to achieve goals on short-term
yields, but instead to safeguard the market position of our Company,
and to secure our employees' jobs over the medium- and long term. For
this reason, we are intentionally stepping up our investments in
strategically important R&D projects. We are currently reviewing the
effects on our 2009 earnings goal."

The consequences of the downward economic cycle on WORLD OF
MEDICINE's business are difficult to assess with absolute certainty.
WORLD OF MEDICINE is expecting a restraint development in the 2nd
quarter, followed by a recovery at year-end 2009. At this time, the
Company is reassigning employees from departments which lag in orders
to production lines that are being used to full capacity. Despite
this, the Management Board may enforce a short-time work schedule on
a temporary basis (starting in May) as a tool for the affected
divisions.
