The Berner Oberland-Bahnen AG was able to better its results for the
first half of 2010 in comparison to last year. The first six months
resulted in a loss of CHF 1.0 million against a loss of CHF 1.9
million in the same period last year. If no dramatic events occur,
the Berner Oberland-Bahnen AG can assume that it will also be able to
achieve a profit as in 2009. Experience shows that the company
achieves a better result in the second half of the year than in the
first. Both the Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB) and the Schynige
Platte Railway (SPB), which is owned by the same company, carried
fewer passengers than in the previous year. After a highly promising
start with excellent winter-sport business, BOB frequencies fell from
the month of March. In comparison to the previous year, when the BOB
was able to profit from numerous Jungfrau Railways special offers, in
the second semester the railway carried 19% fewer guests - although
with a higher average revenue. Unfavourable weather conditions also
contributed to the drop in frequencies. Similarly, the start of the
season for the Schynige Platte Railway also literally went down the
drain. Considering the circumstances, the drop in traffic income is
moderate at -2%. The company received CHF 0.3 million less in
compensation for its public transport services. Overall, operating
revenue dropped by CHF 0.5 million to CHF 13.4 million. Personnel,
maintenance and renewal costs are noticeably below those of the
previous year, so that overall operating expenditure is CHF 1.5
million less than last year´s figure.
