IBM at CeBIT 2006: Innovation that matters
Geschrieben am 01-03-2006 |
Stuttgart (ots) - "We want to make our clients more innovative. This is the only way they can secure competitive advantages in a global market", said Johann Weihen, Country General Manager, IBM Germany. "Innovation means much more than simply developing new technologies and products. It involves working with clients to redefine business models."
At the CeBIT 2006 trade fair, IBM is presenting solutions and projects that underscore its role as innovation partner. Highlights include a joint project with the Juelich Research Center, innovative industry solutions for telemedicine, logistics and energy and power, as well as the cell processor and its various applications. Future-driven companies are constantly looking for renewal and sustainable competitive advantage, stressed Weihen. "Drawing on our consulting expertise, systems, services, software, technology, development partnerships and financing models, we are now helping our clients more than ever to fuel innovation."
Research center in Juelich: scientists as clients
One example of the innovative transformation of a business model is a joint project with Germany's Juelich Research Center. The center is using two IBM supercomputers - Blue Gene and p690 - to provide the computing resources for 150 groups of researchers throughout Europe. These researchers work on all topics relating to energy, information, the environment and health, sharing valuable knowledge with European scientists and colleagues. These scientists - as "clients" of the research center - benefit not only from the computing capacity provided but, in particular, from the experience of those programming the supercomputers at the same time.
Greater quality of life with telemedicine
Telemedicine - remote care with the help of telematics - will transform the care provided to patients who are chronically ill. They can be monitored remotely to facilitate better medical care at significantly lower cost. Simple terminal devices such as weight and and blood pressure measurements can be connected wirelessly with a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone to relay patient data to a medical information system via a mobile portal.
Because IBM's telemedicine solutions are based on open systems, standards, solutions and interfaces they can easily be integrated into existing hospital information systems.
RFID in logistics: IBM as partner to the DHL Innovation Initiative Under the direction of Deutsche Post World Net, IBM, Intel, Philips and SAP are to develop new logistics technologies and bring them to market as part of the DHL Innovation Initiative. One of the first projects launched under this initiative is the reorganization of a repairing service for electronic devices with the help of RFID. The new service solution will be introduced at a joint press briefing together with DHL at CeBIT. Aside from this project, RFID plays an important part in many other solution concepts being exhibited at CeBIT, for example in the optimization of production processes or the monitoring of company premises and installations.
The "intelligent" power grid: optimizing energy management
Electricity companies and customers alike benefit from the use of intelligent meters and sensors that control and monitor energy consumption. At the same time, electricity companies can use this equipment to optimize their processes, monitor their supply networks better and devise new product offerings for their customers.
IBM's "intelligent network" solution helps seamlessly integrate "intelligence" components into existing energy infrastructures and systems. One example to be presented at CeBIT is the automated meter management, which enables power consumption to be recorded on a fully automated basis.
IBM has already implemented such projects with a number of European power utilities and is an innovation and technology partner in the pilot project launched by Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg AG to encourage customers to use energy at off-peak times.
The cell chip: outstanding performance and new design
Outstanding computing performance, large memory bandwidth and unusual design enable the cell chip to set new standards in the development of microprocessors. The cell processor's technology allows much faster processing of data- and computing-intensive applications.
IBM and the Fraunhofer Institute of Technical and Business Mathematics (ITWM) are exhibiting the PV-4D visualization software on a cluster of Cell Blade prototypes. This software, which has won the Fraunhofer research prize, enables the interactive visualization of large quantities of data from scientific calculations and imaging processes in the fields of medical technology and oil production.
Visitors can also view the volume rendering of a human heart in real time.
Wearing special glasses, they can see the heart in 3D, turn it interactively and view any cross-sections they like. This solution enables doctors to diagnose illnesses more quickly and accurately and to plan operations better. Cell chips are also used in consumer electronics and multimedia as well as in data- and computing-intensive applications in brain research, bioinformatics, aviation and the processing of seismic data. The cell chip is the result of a five-year collaboration between Sony, Toshiba and IBM. The Sony Playstation 3, which is to be marketed later this year, will be the first mass product to contain a cell processor.
Searching for the right innovation strategy
Visitors looking to find their own strategy for unlocking innovation can talk to IBM about the best ways of achieving this at its "YOUR Guide to Innovation" info point. IBM will be providing a general explanation of its business and infrastructure solutions and presenting analytical methods and techniques that companies can use to identify the best customized solutions for their needs in order to transform themselves into innovative on-demand businesses.
